A lot of hotels are available on Twitter nowadays. It is an easy service used for microblogging; posting small messages with updates about your hotel and allow followers to keep updated on what’s going on in your hotel. A Twitter account can be set up for a lot of purposes, therefore it might be useful to read this tutorial which explains how to create a twitter account for your hotel. Like in our former tutorials on Facebook (part 1 and part 2) we will use our fictive case hotel ‘Hotel XYZ’ which is located in Amsterdam. In the first part we will explain how to create a corporate Twitter account, in the second part we will tell more about how to create an attractive Twitter page.
Four steps to create a Twitter account for your hotel:
Go to the website of Twitter. Here you will see a small registration form for creating an account.
Here you have to fill out your full name. Typ your hotel’s name here, it might be smart to add the city of your hotel here as well. By doing this, your potential followers will find Twitter account much easier. However, do not add the amount of stars to the name (like “Hotel XYZ***”) because this will make it harder for potential followers to find your Twitter account.
Furthermore you have to fill out your e-mail address. Make sure you use the e-mail address of the one responsible for this Twitter account. Do not use the hotel’s general e-mail address (like “Info@HotelXYZ.nl”) because this will result in a lot of Twitter notifications e-mails send to your front office department. Then, you also have to fill out a password. Click ‘Sign up’ to go to the next step.
Note: It is not possible to use an e-mail address that is already registered with another Twitter account.
Note: Twitter tends to change their homepage from time to time, so the sign up form might look sligtly different compared to the picture above.
Note: Make sure that you clearly describe your hotel in your full name. E.g. if you are an Amsterdam based Hilton hotel, do not fill out ‘Hotel Amsterdam’ but something like ‘Hilton Amsterdam’ as there are more hotels located in Amsterdam.
Next, you will be forwarded to a more detailed form for creating a Twitter account.
Here your name, e-mail address and password are already filled out. You only have to fill out your username, which will be the Twitter name of your hotel. This is used to distinguish you from other Twitter accounts and mention you in other tweets. You can check the box for the option to keep you logged in on this computer. This is only recommended when you are working on a computer that is only used by the ones responsible for this Twitter account. When finished, click the big yellow button saying ‘Create my account’.
Note: Make sure you use an easy to recognize and short username.
Note: You will receive a confirmation e-mail on the provided e-mail account. Make sure you follow the instructions in this e-mail to make sure you receive notifications.
You will be forwarded to another page with Twitter account suggestions which might be interesting to follow. After having clicked the button behind the accounts you want to follow you can click the button (which is located at the bottom of the page) to go to the next step.
On the next page you are able to search for Twitter accounts of your interest. Fill out subjects or persons you would like to follow in the search bar and click the button behind the Twitter account you want to follow. When finished press the button (which is located at the bottom of the page) to finish the creation process of your Twitter account.
Note: It might be necessary to click the button (which is located at the bottom of the page) before the button shows up.
Congratulations! You have just created a Twitter account for your hotel. In our next blog we will explain how to create an attractive Twitter page.
